2. Canon Character Information
Name: (Darth) Maul.
PB: Animated.
Journal:
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Age: Mid 30.
Appearance:
Maul is an average sized (I'd say 5'10") Zabrak of red skin. His flesh is littered with black markings. He has no hair but has the identifying crown of horns atop his head that Zabrak are known for. His eyes are a combination of yellow close to the pupil and red surrounding. His teeth are jagged and he seems to have a piercing on the top shell of his left ear in the animated series.
Maul is well built in muscle but his frame is more athletic than bodybuilder in type. In comparison to his structure in Phantom Menace, The Clone Wars sees him having lost significant amount of weight likely due to malnutrition for 10 years. He is completely mechanical from the mid-waist down and has undergone two different cybernetic restructures with it. Most recently, with his legs repaired in a humanoid fashion, he has taken to wearing pants again and a black vest which will be how he shows up. Black gloves cover his hands as well
He wields a red light-saber and has been known for also having a double-sided light saber however this will not be coming with him.
History: Clone Wars Specific; Maul on Wookieepedia
Powers/Talents:
Combat:
Maul has been schooled in four different types of art; three with the light-saber (Niman, Juyo/Vaapad, Jar'Kai) and one with hand to hand (Teräs Käsi). Juyo is extremely aggressive and takes a very strong Force user to channel the energy demanded to apply this skill for long term application. In combat, Maul is nearly unparallelled. Not only is he strong in muscle and agility but he is also persistent and well fueled so much so that he can easily wear someone down well before he tires out himself.
The (Dark Side of the) Force:
"Evil is a word used by the ignorant and the weak. The dark side is about survival. It's about unleashing your inner power. It glorifies the strength of the individual."
―Darth Zannah
Personality:
The Force is an energy that binds every living and non-living thing. It surrounds us and flows through us and with great practice it can be used to aid us.
The Dark Side of the Force is often used for more selfish endeavors that easily corrupt. It is not always a thing of evil (although extremely easy to lose your way in). The Dark Side of the force focuses on internal passions, fear, hate, anguish, and rather than suppressing these emotions it uses them. It is often used to meet an end that is not possible by using the light. For example, the Dark Side when executed by a skilled practitioner can make the unnatural happen such as creating life or surviving that what seems impossible. Where the Light side embraces the natural order of things the Dark Side has a power to control things that should not be.
In this regard, the Dark Side is consuming. The power it holds too commonly devours the soul and - regardless the original intention - ends up manipulating the user or manifesting their 'darker emotions' into an entire personality. However, again, this is often left to perspective. Yes, the Dark Side has powerful practitioners with malicious intent but the Light side is not without it's flaws and poor intentions.
Those who use The Force can do many different things with it such as excel their speed, strength, and distance (such as being able to jump ridiculously high and far) and well as their senses. It sharpens their reflexes and brings them a bit of a sixth sense. It can also encourage them, guide them, heal their soul and feed it. The Force can also be used for various types of telekinesis and telepathy. Force users who are excellent in their skill can also have premonitions and visions of the future.
For more information, read this and also this as there's a large amount of things to cover in address to The Force.
General:
Maul has exhibited ability to command and lead as well as school and conduct rule and order (under his own ideal). He has a growing ability to manipulate and create sense amongst selfish intentions. The intellect that had been damaged by extreme loyalty to his Master seems to be putting itself into gear as he considers himself now the master.
When we first see Maul he is under the tutelage of Darth Sidious and is known as Darth maul. He was completely faithful to his master and for that time he was an exemplary apprentice that executed his assignments flawlessly. Without his knowledge, Darth Sidious and Darth Plagueis kept the higher goals of the Sith from him and used him as a pawn, an assassin. However it is later questioned just how out of the loop he was as he might have been more knowledgeable than observed with his understanding that the Clone Wars was on the horizon. Maul's fighting skill is nearly unparallelled and up until his life-altering match with Obi-Wan he was the perfect obedient tool-- a trait likely gained from being taken so young and bred into a weapon. The Sith training is torturous and extreme which is a good insight to his hatred and perfectionism.
Quiet. Watchful. Well meditated. Powerful. Patient. Completely ruthless. Persistent and determined.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: his only failure.
Maul survived a swift attack that should have ended his life. Severed in half, his extreme sense of survival and immediate hatred for Kenobi's actions kept his spirit in tact as his body was not. He stewed in his hatred and despair for his losses for ten years and lost himself completely-- so much so that when his brother found him, Maul could barely conjure coherent sentences. However, upon his mind and body being restored by Mother Talzin on Dothomir he regained a powerful sense of self (yet still a little bit directionless).
His 'rebirth' sees him as more powerful, corrupt, and vengeful than ever before. His persistence returned and his extreme physical health fueled by the hatred and the Dark Side makes him a weapon to not be trifled with yet again. He no longer subscribes to the apprentice standard, however, and takes his own fate into his own hands making claim that he and his brother are the true lords of the Sith. There is something horribly broken in him that was once not: a profound loss. He craves the power and influence he had over people long ago under the wings of Sidious; his control and perfection. Maul has come to learn his new purpose as dominance and it is questionable whether he truly wishes to serve under Sidious again but rather surpass him. It seems most likely that Maul's goal in the long run is to create his own order under his own command as we see him begin to do so with the collective of Crime Families on Mandalore.
Maul is still a ruthless creature who will go to any extreme necessary in order to execute a plan. He is manipulative and in an extreme sense he is very pragmatic. It is uncommon for a person to find themselves indispensable at his feet as he is much the type to end a life to prove a point of his authority, power, or simply their failure. However, Maul shows small signs of an ability to connect with other beings in a genuine way (point in case: his brother) and in a twisted way, he holds honor and pride close to his internal code of conduct.
There is much weakness to Maul as a character. He has suffered greatly in the ten years of exile and his soul has festered in dark deep emotions that he cannot let go of. As Obi-Wan mentioned once, he was not given a choice in becoming a Sith. Maul was taken from the Nightbrothers at an early age and upon discovering how strong the Force was with him he was raised to be what he is now. The moral and perspective he grew up with came from Plagueis and Sidious and by how he reacted when Kenobi brought it up, it's a touchy subject. There is a chance that he knows that this is all wrong; that he might have an ability to feel compassion and true honor however deeply buried it is. Nevertheless it is unlikely for him to change as he's too far wrapped up in the Dark Side for that now.
He has a very narrow understanding of how things should be done. An eye for an eye. A nose for a nose. His understanding of justice is very archaic and he believes in a very strict chain of command that is also archaic. You start at the bottom and climb to the top and if you fail, you're gone. The end. Discipline and punishment are core beliefs in him which were likely passed on from his mentors.
There are very few things in which Maul fears. Failure is one. Returning to that purposeless darkness is easily another and in respect so is completely losing his mind again. He fears and admires the power of his previous master. However, as true to the Zabrak kind, he is relatively fearless and will take on whatever comes his way with confidence and pride.
Even with his cybernetic legs, Maul walks proud and clearly carries himself as a warrior of skill. He's a survivor and will go to great lengths to remain alive and strive. Anyone who is Force Sensitive or has an ability to sense the aura of someone will be able to feel the internalized malice, disgust, and loss radiating off of him.
Why would your character be chosen?
Maul has an intense connection with the Dark Side of the Force and a will made of steel. He is very strong both physically and spiritually and while not as intelligent as his superiors, he has a mind for strategy that is growing.
How much does your character know about nonhumans?
Maul is from a universe that is very interconnected on a galactic scale. He himself is not human and he knows of many different species of other beings but it is questionable whether he knows much mythology. I'm pretty okay with any direction this could go.
Why this character:
I enjoy this character because he has depth. While being a villain and having a corroded sense of direction he has a history that could be explored and expanded on and he is not so flat that there is no possibility of development and change. I do believe that I have a good steady interest in him.

4. Samples
Please either include a first-person entry that could be your character's first post on The Network, or a third-person prose or action spam sample that could be your character's reaction to arriving in Dagaz. For the other two samples, links to previous character examples are fine.
First-Person: (5+ sentences) [voice]
[ A low smokey voice comes through to the public. Steady and strong. ]
Searching for a mate throughout the galaxy. What an honor it is. He must be important to have access to such a power, taking us unwillingly.
And a low standard. [ the crack of his grin can almost be heard in that. After a moment's silence: ] I feel you, Jedi.
Third-Person:
It was moments after his defeating Pre Vizsla that something felt off. The shadows came in a quick movement to surround him and now he was hands and knees on expansive marble. He felt a vertigo that was unexplainable and felt the presence of a life-form that was all too strange to him. A gloved hand comes to his head a moment, then back to the ground, and then he raises it to use the force but falls dizzy again.
"Prince," Maul growls from his teeth as he gets to his feet and notices immediately that his light-saber is gone. "The Nysgod, who are these people?"
This feeling... It is not normal. This transition here is not natural. Something is out of alignment, something is wrong, something is... he cannot tell but for now it seems the wisest decision to watch and listen. If these words are to be trusted then he cannot go home yet but that was not necessarily negative. There was law here, order, other beings of varied power that he might tap in to and use.
Yes, there could be an advantage to being here. He does not sense his previous Master. He could have rule. He could create his own order. A smile slides over his lips as he walks to the room they'd assigned him. Yes, this could be good.

17/9/13 20:12Overview (TCW)
Maul is a Dathomirian Zabrak from the Republic Classic Era and was the first apprentice to Darth Sidious. At the time of being an apprentice, Maul was ruthless and pointed in purpose having funneled his hatred into a purposeful wrath that eliminated everything in his path. His major failure was met at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi who in a swift stroke cut his body in half. After that, Maul was replaced by another and he was left to stew in madness and obsession for ten years until his brother Savage (pronounced sah-vahge) found him. Maul was brought to Dathomir to be restored and treated by Mother Talzin in mind and body.
He is now completely cybernetic from the mid-waist down and, due to his years of exile and madness, far stronger with the Dark Side than he was under the tutelage of Darth Sidious. His end goal seemed unclear but as the Shadow Collective grew and he had successfully taken rule over Mandalore, it looks as if his intention is to create his own order. He seems far less serving to another, having taken the reigns to now be the master, and displays a horrible amount of broken with every monologue he decides to share with the class.
Overview (PM & Books)
Maul is a Dathomirian Zabrak from the Republic Classic Era and was the first apprentice to Darth Sidious. As an apprentice to the Sith Master, he was trained heavily to be an assassin rather than a Sith Lord (regardless that Sidious makes him believe he is a Sith Lord). Maul exhibits extreme loyalty to his master and believes in the Sith philosophy. Due to the trauma of his training, not only is he deathly skilled in martial arts but he also has a very skewed sense of reality and how things should be. He tends to be very quiet but it is a major mistake to take his silence as obedience or weakness. As a Zabrak, he has inherited the unnaturally high pain threshold that all of his species tend to have.
Strengths
✔ driven, ambitious, resilient, passionate, resourceful, purposeful
Weaknesses
✘ easily angered, wild, emotionally damaged, single-minded, hateful & loathing
Permissions
Maul is powerful, but I typically try and contact people before I put his abilities with the Force into use. Maul is a highly skilled assassin and is sharpened in four different types of martial arts including hand to hand.
☑ fighting (let's talk about the result though)
☑ arguing
☑ hideous vulgar and disgusting threats
☑ angst
☑ mockery
☑ alignment switch
☒ smut because dude he has no parts anymore and also, weird.
☒ cannibalism and vore and stuff like that :|
☒ Uhm, ask if you're worried. I'm usually down for things of most variety.
Permissions I need from you:
1. Force usage (physical)
Maul can use the force to push, pull, and choke another person. Typically I try to keep this to permission upon scenario but generally, is it alright for him to do so? (If not, I'd suggest not pissing him off lmao)
2. Force usage (mental)
While Maul is a killer, it is possible with his extreme connection to the dark side that he can influence another to do something or think something given the proper amount of manipulation (which would be used in conjunction with the ability below). What are the odds of this happening?
3. Force sense
Maul can sense other force users and, perhaps more importantly, fears and hatred. What will he feel off your character?
4. Violence
While we see a more crafty side to Maul in the Clone Wars, it is not to be forgotten that he was trained to be an assassin. In this regard, he is volatile and violent and easily triggered in to attacking. Can he engage with your character?
